This month saw Mental Health Awareness Week. The Media, the Royals and many high profile celebrities have been raising awareness of this sensitive but so important subject, because our mental health is as important as our physical health but there is still a stigma attached to mental health and unfortunately people continue to suffer in silence. Berry & Lamberts HR manager Kim Lennon talks Mental Health.
My previous company was a huge multinational with money and resources for such initiatives with an Employee Assist Helpline providing dedicated support and counselling services for employees with both physiological and mental health issues. In a small law firm we need to rely on our ability to support each other, spot the signs and know where to go for help. Continuing to raise awareness is a giant step towards this.
As an employer the most important thing you can do for your employees is show that you care and help your staff navigate their way to practical help and advice. In Berry & Lamberts, whilst we are not in a position to offer a helpline, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our employees and want to ensure that our staff are able to find the right support if they need it. Supporting Mental Health Awareness Week provided the ideal opportunity to raise that awareness and share the names of organisations and links to go to for help. It might not be a dedicated helpline but the result is the still the same with access to professionals who can help provide the same assistance, support and advice. It’s not everyone who needs these resources but by continuing to raise awarenesss it will help those people whom, whilst they might not need the help themselves, to be more understanding of others who do and encourage them to seek help.
